The BMW M5 has less power and torque and fewer gears and is still faster 0-100km/h……… this is because it is lighter than the XFR. The most amazing thing is that this is achieved without turbo’s and/or super chargers used by Jaguar and Audi. You have to be a little skeptical about the 0-100km/h claimed by Mercedes.

The Jaguar XFR is certainly the most practical and the cheapest by a hairs breadth.

The Audi RS6 has the advantage of four wheel drive, for wet weather, to keep all that power on the road. The Audi should be the best for overtaking and highway driving with the most torque and the best power to mass.

On paper the Audi would be my choice, yes it’s a bit pricey, yes it uses a bit more fuel but it should out perform each and every one of it’s competitors easily.

I would however take a bet that the Mercedes E63 AMG is going to be the only one that doesn’t give you trouble………… our north American friends may have excellent service from Audi and Jaguar dealerships but where I come from this still leaves a lot to be desired (from the horror stories I have heard from friends). With BMW, you have to pick your dealership ………….and don’t drive the car too hard…. BMW assure us they have ironed out the niggles (they would as they still have to get the money back from their capital expenditure on their tooling – and they still won’t admit that their E46 four cylinder cars had problems – the friendly workshop assistant however told me that there are plenty of them coming in with similar electrical problems all the time while the six cylinders don’t – yet still no recall). My last boss had his BMW M5 in the work shop 4 times in 6 months only 18 months ago……………………… are you prepared to take a R1million risk that they aren’t telling a little white lie?

If my friends experiences are right then the BMW is still the only one that comes with a no questions asked motor plan….. all the rest have terms and conditions as long as your arm and make you pay for anything they can get away with……….. that “cheaper” initial asking price for the others may turn into a more expensive option.

For embarrassing your friends robot to robot and the one that I feel looks the best go for the E63. Just double check that 0-100km/h yourself when driving it. For the one with the best interior finish go for the Jaguar. But, you drive them and decide, that’s the beauty of buying a car…. you don’t have to trust idiots like me who write about the numbers and our feelings when your requirement and lusting may be very different to mine.

BUT wait………… there is a car that I wrote about a few weeks ago……….. the Porsche Panamera 4S. I however hate the idea of a four door Porsche saloon………… but then I hated the Cayenne until they put on bigger wheels ………….. and I love the GTS.

In fact I think all of the above cars are a huge waste of money……….. Buy an SUV – more comfortable seating position, no scraping speed bumps, no wondering what’s happening in front of you in traffic, able to mount the curb to do a u-turn when you’re in a rush for a meeting, no pick up trucks cutting you off, able to tow your toys anywhere, as good on the odd dirt road on your vacation as it is on tar (better for the snow than the saloons)…………….. If it was my R1million I would buy a BMW X5 for as close to R600k as I could (try for a low miles used approved 3.0sd) and have change for a 996 Carrera 4 (0-100km/h in 5.2). The X5 has world beating interior finish, world beating motor plan, world beating fuel efficiency and in my opinion is more comfortable than these “super” saloons.

If you however are insistent on spending this money on one car consider

  • ML63AMG.
  • BMW X6 xDrive50i
If you want the BEST service and price you will ever get at a BMW dealership in Johannesburg, phone Corrado Cousins at Cedar Isle BMW. 079 715 3376 OR 011 367 1600
I am not making money out of referring you to him. He simply is the best car salesman I have EVER dealt with. On one occassion he drove me 35km to work when his bosses refused to let their driver take me. On another he leant me his own car for two days when the dealership gave me a long story about no more courtesy cars. This, all before he knew I had a website with a readership. Tell him Quentin sent you.
