Investment car - Porsche 911SC

Damn, my local Porsche dealer is a good salesman……… he knows all he has to do, to eventually get me to spend too much money with him, is to keep putting me in his cars, whenever I am at his showroom.

He had a Red, RHD 991SC (204hp version – 5.8sec 0-100kph) on the floor a few weeks ago and sent me round the block in it…………. WOW………… if you thought the normal 188Hp 911SC was good, this one is out of this world. It is one of the fastest classic Porsches you can own and is just so much fun to drive….. that little bit of extra acceleration is just SO…………… SO…………. Porsche………

Like all Porsche purchasing guides suggest, if there is anything wrong with major components, thank the owner and walk away. Which I sadly did…………. It veered to the one side under heavy braking……… could have just been alignment……… but also could have been bent suspension……… really something that a careful owner would have had the detail to put right if it was a simple thing like alignment……. It therefore must have been something more serious………….

Much like the 996……. that was VERY well priced at R350k a few months ago……. Which I sadly walked away form and then …………Not so sadly after chatting to the salesman a few weeks later. The poor guy who bought it paid R60k to redo the engine …………. after driving it for three days……… a factor of the previous owner not having made it to the service intervals at the right time and having run the car longer than it should have without her friendly Porsche mechanic looking at it. I am sure the degraded high performance oil (that should have been replaced a few thousand kilo’s before) wore out things that shouldn’t have worn. I have also been told, but haven’t been able to confirm, that Porsche’s first attempt at water cooling (the 996) and mass production (the 996) had brought reliability problems in earlier 996’s.

Bottom line………… come back here in a week or two to see my comprehensive  Porsche buyers checklist……………. A few easy to do steps you can apply to save yourself hassle and money…….

Remember, you can buy a 911SC that does 0-100kph in 5.8sec for R250k or you can buy a new Boxster for R595k that does it 0.4sec faster……….. R345k more to go 0.4sec faster? You have got to have money and no brains……… Oh and don’t forget the 911SC will be worth R500k in 5 years and the Boxster will be worth R220k……….STUPID…………. AND the 911SC is just so much more ALIVE.
