HOWEVER the manual 996 Carrera 4 is a completely different animal. Where the tiptronic, two wheel drive was always in the wrong gear in the corner (either too high, bogging down or too low breaking the tail out) the manual is always in exactly the gear you want (as you have selected it a millisecond before the bank and bend you see ahead of you) and there are no surprises when cornering, that the gear might go up or down and un-settle the car at precisely the wrong moment (I did however not check if you could drive the tiptronic like a manual?).
I have yet to drive the Porsche Boxster S, only having had the privilege of the Porsche Boxster, but I now understand the Porsche enthusiasts love for a manual Porsche 911 ……… it drives EXACTLY as it should. Jeremy Clarkson’s comment on the Boxster “showing that your life just quite didn’t turn out as you planned” is now clear for me after driving such a well balanced 911. Yes the Mercedes Benz C55 AMG was more effortless in traffic with it’s auto box, as was the Tiptronic 996 and the BMW 335i coupe was seemingly more blistering in a straight line (although not actually in reality)……… BUT for similar money I would drive a 1992 Toyota Cressida automatic as a traffic everyday car and save the 996 as my weekend affair.
I now have to apologize for my arrogant and ignorant comments to the salesman at my local Porsche dealership who was trying to sell me a 996 convertible for a good price and I pushed him away saying that it may still depreciate and would be less reliable than the 911SC…………. Small ounces of truth in those statements maybe, but who cares when you can drive a car like this every week. Save up for the small depreciation and extra maintenance, take a Viagra and drive like you stole it till the sun comes up.
Jarred had to pry my fingers from the steering wheel…. I just kept driving it round and round and round and round…………and where are those blog police…………….. “Sorry officer I was never told the rules of the cyber super highway. I will be sure to not have ANY fun next time”.
Thanks to Jarred Coode of Consolidated Auto for letting me have the drive of a life time.
Jarred if I didn’t have to pay for school fees and land to build a house on this year, I would have signed the cheque before even getting out of the car.
So car fans……….. if you’re in the market for a Porsche 911 Carrera 4 996 phone Consolidated Auto and ask to speak to one of their sales reps. Tell them you where referred by QsCarReview. It will cost you R 499 950. You will be hard pressed to find a Porsche 911 Carrera 4 996 in as good condition with as low miles for a lesser price.
Tel: 011 306-2000. This car, apart from being the best car I have ever had the privilege of driving, is also certainly the most solid, well maintained Porsche I have driven to date……………….. and I have driven at least ten in the last 18 months.
Manual. 2001. Silver. 88000km. F/S/H. Sunroof.
Anybody got a cure for too much coffee and adrenalin………………………..?
