911 GT3 (997) vs Audi R8 vs 911 Carrera 2 (996) vs Boxster

So for once the tweed coated car television presenter is correct ….. the rear engined Porsche 997 GT3 (i.e. the newest shape 911 GT3 – just not the face lift) is a bit of a beast around corners.
The weight is in the “wrong” place (behind the rear wheels). You however have to marvel at the brains of people who buy them …….. some put cement bags in the boot (in the nose of the 911) to balance out the weight distribution….. surely this just makes the car slower in the corner? Clarkson insists the R8 is better because it is mid engined. Watch him crash to prove his point and kiss the Stig for being WRONG.

I loved driving the mid engine Boxster (it is simply sublime). Clarkson however says it is rubbish because it “shows others that your life hasn’t quite turned out as planned”. He prefers the SLK55 …… which handles as wildly (if not more) than the 911……….. he really can’t make up his mind.

OK so maybe he has a point about the Boxster ………. Check out his competitors head to head test on the top right of this page……. They make me think my money is better spent on a used 911 rather than a newer Boxster……… I never thought I would say that, I’ve always dreamed of owning a Boxster.

Boxster Spyder vs 996 (10 year old 911)

No matter which way you look at it …….. that tail kick in the corner on the 911 (the two wheel drive) is certainly not for the faint hearted, the un-insured or those who aren’t professional racing drivers…. I find it a little addictive though….. as sublime as the Boxster is it’s a little too perfect.

The 911 remains king………… till the V10 Audi R8 arrives…………I suppose…
