The new 2010 BMW 5 series has all the bits from the new 7-Series, just in a more compact package.
It will be released with various engine sizes (unfortunately without the V12) but the most impressive is the 2.0-litre turbodiesel. 184bhp, 56.5mpg and a CO2 figure of 132g/km. The 535i petrol performs at an average of 33.2mpg, and emissions are just 199g/km of CO2.
Options include iDrive with an incredible hard drive-based multimedia system and an electronic chassis that includes anti-roll and four-wheel-adaptive steering. Automatic gearbox option has eight-speed.
The weight is significantly up over the old model, but BMW’s chassis engineers say it’ll handle better than the 7-Series due to enhanced programming of the electronics.
